  • Alan Wilder (Depeche Mode) and Doug McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb) cover an Alex Harvey Band song. That either gets you going or it doesn't. Let's consider the remixes, the reason for the single. Twenty years on (oh dear), not every remix of this has stood the test of time. No surprise there, especially as one is the Trance Mix. You win nothing to guess that one sounds a bit dodgy this far on. No remix credit on it, so notable early '90s trance guru Alan Wilder was at the helm for it, I guess. Other early '90s trance guru Daniel Miller was at the controls on the two Conspiracy Theory remixes. Those sound a bit more dodgy to me -- or maybe just because there's two of them there's twice the opportunity to get tired of the idea. All joking aside, there are good remixes. Alan's trance expertise might have been a bit low at the time, but on the Deformity version, he does a fantastic job with some weirdo, erratic techno (if you like reversed kicks, you're in for a treat). Varley + Bell drop an LFO mix that sits somewhere between their two albums stylistically. Samples overdriven just enough to give you the warehouse vibe. (Do track down the 7" of this song for its flip is their take on a single version of the song. It's got vocals, and a repetitive, minimal bleep thing going on. Aces.) And then there's Moby, in what I like to call his Bryan Ferry phase. Every remix he did circa '92-'93 has some lightly housey tinkling piano, chugging bassline, and a conga/tom groove. It's like Ferry's louche lounge lizard spirit has descended upon 1992's clubs in the wee hours of the morning, and lo, it was mildly erotic. Sounds corny, perhaps, but el Mobo knew what he was doing back then.
